Orchard Hills-Maplewood Homeowners' Association Teams Up with Green ReLeaf on Neighborhood Ash Tree Replacement Project - 2006 and 2007Since 2002, the emerald ash borer, an invasive beetle, has decimated Michigan ash tree populations and thus has wreaked havoc on Michigan ecosystems and suburban neighborhoods. The Orchard Hills-Maplewood Homeowners' Association (OHMHA)began An effort in 2006 and continued 2007 to replace many of the dead ash trees that dotted their neighborhoods. In 2006, OHMHA partnered with Global ReLeaf of Michigan and the City of Ann Arbor to plant trees on parts of Antietam, Lexington, and Bunker Hill roads. The tree planting was a huge success, with 30-40 neighbors chipping in.
On October 27, 2007 OHMHA renewed that effort and planted 36 trees on Bluett, Yorktown, Yellowstone, Lexington, and Rumsey streets, about 1 tree per house in that part of the neighborhood. For both plantings, Global ReLeaf of Michigan provided the trees and ground ash tree stumps, and the City of Ann Arbor's forestry department assisted with transporting the trees to the planting site.
For more information on each of these plantings you can read about them in the October 2007 and February 2008 OHMHA Newsletters. Check out the Global ReLeaf website at www.globalreleaf.org for more information on how to organize your own neighborhood tree planting. |
